Native to southeastern Europe and Asia Minor, Carpinus orientalis, known as the Oriental Hornbeam, is a small, slow-growing deciduous tree highly valued in bonsai for its fine branching, small leaves, and naturally twisted trunk. The leaves are small, ovate, and green in spring and summer, turning yellow or reddish-orange in autumn.

    Quantity

Sunlight: Prefers full sun, but can tolerate partial shade, especially in very hot regions.

Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding waterlogging. Water more frequently during hot summer days.

Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity. Occasional misting helps in dry climates.

Pruning: Structural pruning can be done in late winter. Pinching during the growing season helps maintain shape and stimulate fine branching.

Fertilization: Feed from spring to early autumn with a balanced fertiliser, reducing in late summer.

Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in early spring using a well-draining soil mix (akadama, pumice, and some organic soil).

Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, inconspicuous flowers in spring, followed by small winged seeds. The main interest lies in foliage, form, and autumn colour.
