Originating from Asia, Zelkova serrata is one of the most popular species in the world of bonsai due to its elegance and resilience. Its leaves, similar to those of the oak, change colour throughout the seasons, shifting from bright green in summer to shades of yellow, orange and red in autumn. The bark displays a beautiful and distinctive texture, with fissures and grooves that add visual interest to the bonsai. It is a fast-growing and easy-to-maintain tree, making it a popular choice among bonsai enthusiasts.

Sunlight: Zelkova serrata prefers full sun for healthy and vigorous growth. It can tolerate partial shade, but growth may be slower and less lush.

Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, watering regularly to prevent it from drying out. Avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot. Ensure that water can drain freely.

Humidity: Zelkova serrata is not very demanding regarding humidity, but it benefits from moderate levels. A humidity tray is not necessary unless the environment is extremely dry.

Pruning: Pruning is important to maintain the shape and structure of the Zelkova serrata bonsai. Trim new growth to encourage branching and keep a compact size. Wiring can be done during the growing season, but take care not to damage the branches.

Fertilization: Fertilize your Zelkova serrata during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Reduce or stop fertilizing in late summer and autumn.

Repotting: Repot your Zelkova serrata every 2–3 years, preferably in spring, before new growth begins. Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix.

Flowering and Fruiting: Zelkova serrata produces small yellow-green flowers in spring, followed by small winged fruits that ripen in autumn. Proper pruning can help encourage good flowering and fruiting.
