Native to Europe, Euonymus europaeus, known as European Spindle Tree, is a deciduous shrub or small tree highly prized in bonsai for its brilliant autumn colours and decorative fruit. Its oval green leaves turn shades of red and pink in autumn, and its bright pink fruits with orange seeds add great seasonal interest.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun for strong colouring and good fruiting. Can tolerate partial shade, though colours may be less intense.
Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding waterlogging. Water regularly during summer and reduce in winter.
Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity and benefits from occasional misting during dry periods.
Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape the tree and remove crossing branches. Light trimming after flowering helps control size and maintain form.
Fertilization: Feed from spring to early autumn with a balanced fertiliser. Avoid fertilising during winter dormancy.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in early spring before new growth begins. Use a well-draining soil mix (akadama and pumice).
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small greenish-yellow flowers in late spring, followed by striking pink capsules that open to reveal orange seeds — the main ornamental feature of the species.
