Native to China, Pseudolarix amabilis, known as Golden Larch, is a deciduous conifer highly valued in bonsai for its elegant appearance, soft texture, and brilliant golden autumn colour. Its fine, light-green needles grow in spiral clusters and turn a rich golden yellow before falling in autumn. The straight trunk and fissured bark give it a mature and graceful look.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun for healthy growth and vibrant autumn colour. Can tolerate partial shade, but excessive shade may reduce needle density.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist. Pseudolarix is sensitive to both overwatering and prolonged dryness. Water regularly and generously during summer.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Occasional misting helps maintain healthy needles.
Pruning: Prune during dormancy (winter) to remove unwanted or crossing branches. In summer, pinch new shoots to refine the shape and encourage fine ramification.
Fertilization: Feed from spring to early autumn with a balanced fertiliser. Reduce or stop fertilising in late autumn and winter.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, in early spring before buds open. Use a well-draining, slightly acidic mix (akadama, pumice, and some kanuma).
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, brownish cones, though rarely on bonsai specimens. Its main ornamental value lies in the delicate needle texture and the brilliant golden autumn colour.
