Native to Europe, Fagus sylvatica, known as the European Beech, is a deciduous tree highly valued in bonsai for its elegant growth, dark green oval leaves, and firm trunk with grey bark that develops interesting texture with age. Ideal for upright and informal styles.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun or partial shade. Direct sunlight promotes smaller, compact leaves ideal for bonsai.
Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding waterlogging. Reduce watering in winter during dormancy.
Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity. Occasional misting helps maintain healthy foliage, particularly in dry climates or indoor settings.
Pruning: Can be pruned during the growing season to stimulate fine branching and control shape. Structural pruning should be done in late winter before bud break.
Fertilization: Feed from spring to early autumn with a balanced fertiliser. Reduce feeding in late summer to prepare the tree for winter dormancy.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, preferably in early spring, using a well-draining, fertile substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small inconspicuous flowers in spring and nut-like fruits (samaras) in late summer and autumn. The main ornamental appeal lies in trunk texture and delicate foliage.
