Native to Europe, Carpinus betulus, known as European Hornbeam, is a deciduous tree highly valued in bonsai for its dense foliage, elegant texture, and robust trunk. The green leaves turn yellow in autumn, adding seasonal interest.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun or partial shade. Direct sunlight promotes smaller, compact leaves ideal for bonsai.
Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding waterlogging. Reduce watering in winter during dormancy.
Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity. Occasional foliar misting can be beneficial during dry periods.
Pruning: Prune during the growing season to stimulate fine branching and maintain aesthetic shape. Structural pruning and defoliation can be performed in late winter or early spring.
Fertilization: Feed from spring to early autumn with a balanced fertiliser. Suspend fertilisation in winter.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, preferably in early spring, using a well-draining, fertile substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small inconspicuous flowers in early spring and pendulous catkin-like fruits. The main ornamental value lies in trunk texture and deciduous foliage.
