Native to Asia, particularly China and Japan, Gardenia jasminoides, commonly known as Cape Jasmine or Gardenia, is an evergreen plant highly valued in bonsai for its glossy dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers that bloom in spring and summer. It is an elegant species, ideal for formal, informal, and shrub-style bonsai.
Sunlight: Prefers bright light and soft sunlight, avoiding intense direct exposure during the hottest hours of the day.
Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but not waterlogged. Sensitive to drought and hard water — use low-lime or rainwater when possible.
Humidity: Enjoys humid environments. Regular misting helps maintain leaf health and prevents pests.
Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage compact growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as flowers form on new shoots.
Fertilization: Feed from spring to summer with an acidic, balanced fertiliser suitable for acid-loving plants. Avoid lime-based fertilisers.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, preferably in spring, using an acidic, well-draining substrate (akadama and kanuma are ideal).
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces fragrant white flowers from spring to summer. Its main ornamental value in bonsai lies in the elegant flowers and the contrast with the dark green foliage.
