Originating from Asia, Pinus thunbergii is one of the most iconic species in classical bonsai, valued for its powerful trunk, thick fissured bark and strong visual presence. Its long, stiff, deep-green needles create contrast and character, making it ideal for robust and expressive styles.
Pot: Tokoname - Yamaki
Sunlight: Prefers full sun all year round. Direct exposure is essential to maintain vigour and compact needles.
Watering: Requires moderate watering, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
Humidity: Well adapted to dry, well-ventilated environments. Misting is not necessary.
Pruning: Prune in spring and early summer, using specific techniques such as candle pruning to control vigour and balance ramification.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during active growth. Adjust feeding according to the tree’s vigour.
Repotting: Every 3–5 years, in spring, using a very well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces decorative cones over time, enhancing the tree’s mature and natural appearance.
