Originating from Asia, Pinus thunbergii ‘Corticosa’ is a variety highly valued in bonsai for its thick, deeply fissured bark with a very pronounced texture, which develops early and gives the tree a mature appearance.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun. Direct exposure is essential for healthy growth and compact needles.
Watering: Requires regular watering, allowing slight drying between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
Humidity: Adapts well to dry environments. Misting is generally unnecessary.
Pruning: Managed through specific pine techniques, such as candle control in spring and needle selection. Responds well to careful technical pruning.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during the active growing season. Adjust according to vigor or refinement goals.
Repotting: Every 3–5 years in spring, using a very well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces decorative woody cones that enhance the tree’s natural and mature character.
