Native to Japan, the Juniperus chinensis 'Itoigawa' is one of the most prized juniper varieties in bonsai, admired for its fine texture, dense foliage, and vibrant green-blue color. Its ability to be shaped into dramatic, flowing forms, combined with remarkable strength and longevity, makes it a favorite among bonsai masters. The contrast between the aged bark and delicate foliage gives it a timeless and serene presence.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun. Direct sunlight helps maintain compact, healthy foliage. Avoid excessive shade.
Watering: Water moderately, keeping the soil slightly moist but never waterlogged. Junipers appreciate short dry intervals between waterings.
Humidity: Adapts well to moderate humidity levels if there is good airflow. Avoid persistently damp conditions.
Pruning: Prune regularly to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. Use manual pinching for refinement. Wiring can be done most of the year, avoiding extreme cold.
Fertilization: Feed from spring through autumn with a balanced fertilizer, reducing during winter. Slow-release organic fertilizers are preferred.
Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years, preferably in spring, using a well-draining mix of akadama, pumice, and coarse sand.
Flowering: The beauty of Juniperus chinensis 'Itoigawa' lies in the harmony between its refined foliage and ancient bark — a living symbol of strength, balance, and calmness.
