Native to various regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Juniperus spp., commonly known as Juniper, is a coniferous genus highly valued in bonsai for its hardiness, aromatic foliage, and sculptural potential. Leaves can be needle-like or scale-like, ranging from dark green to bluish-green, depending on the species. Some varieties produce small, ornamental berries.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun for vigorous growth and healthy foliage colour. Can tolerate light shade, but growth will be slower.
Watering: Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging, especially in pots.
Humidity: Adapts well to varying humidity levels but benefits from good air circulation. Occasional misting helps in very dry climates.
Pruning: Can be pruned and pinched throughout the growing season to maintain desired shape. Avoid removing too much foliage at once.
Fertilization: Feed from spring to early autumn with a balanced fertiliser, reducing frequency during summer.
Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years in early spring. Use a very well-draining soil mix (akadama, pumice, and a little kiryuzuna).
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by small berries in some species. The main appeal lies in the foliage, shape, and trunk.
