Native to Japan, Pinus thunbergii, known as the Japanese Black Pine, is a highly valued conifer in the bonsai world for its rugged appearance, textured bark, and dense, strong needles. It is admired for its ability to convey age and character, even at a young stage. The bark becomes dark and deeply fissured over time, while its glossy dark-green needles grow in pairs and are longer than those of Pinus sylvestris.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun throughout the day. Direct sunlight is essential for vigorous growth and strong, healthy needles.
Watering: Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging, as pine roots require good aeration.
Humidity: Adapts well to different humidity levels but benefits from good air circulation.
Pruning: Perform structural pruning in late winter. Spring candle pinching is crucial for balancing strength and encouraging fine ramification.
Fertilization: Feed regularly from early spring through late autumn, reducing frequency during the hottest summer months. Use a slow-release organic fertiliser.
