Originating from Asia, Juniperus chinensis ‘Itoigawa’ is one of the most highly regarded bonsai varieties for its extremely fine, compact foliage with a soft texture. Its controlled growth and excellent response to pruning allow for the creation of well-defined green masses, ideal for classic and refined styles.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun all year round. Direct exposure is essential to keep the foliage compact and healthy.
Watering: Requires moderate watering, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
Humidity: Well adapted to dry, well-ventilated environments. Misting is not necessary.
Pruning: Prune throughout spring and summer by pinching and selective cutting to maintain shape and foliage density. Avoid drastic pruning.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during active growth. Adjust feeding according to the plant’s vigour.
Repotting: Every 3–5 years, in spring, using a very well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, discreet berry-like cones; the main ornamental interest lies in the foliage and overall structure.
