Originating from Europe, Carpinus betulus is a deciduous species highly valued in bonsai for its controllable growth, excellent fine ramification and strong response to pruning. Its oval, serrated leaves create a dense, natural texture, while the tree develops an elegant and well-defined silhouette.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Good exposure promotes dense foliage and overall vigor.
Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the substrate slightly moist. Avoid prolonged dryness and waterlogging.
Humidity: Adapts well to different humidity levels. Misting is optional.
Pruning: Prune during spring and summer to maintain shape and encourage fine ramification. Tolerates frequent pruning well.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during active growth. Reduce feeding in autumn.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years, in spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces discreet flowers in spring, followed by small winged fruits. The main ornamental interest lies in its structure and foliage.
