Originating from Europe, Fagus sylvatica is a species highly valued in bonsai for its elegant habit, fine ramification and delicate foliage. Its smooth, oval leaves create a soft and uniform texture, while the tree develops a balanced and natural silhouette over time.
Sunlight: Prefers partial shade to gentle sun. Strong direct sunlight may scorch the leaves.
Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the substrate slightly moist. Does not tolerate prolonged dryness.
Humidity: Appreciates humid environments. Misting is recommended, especially during hot or dry periods.
Pruning: Prune in spring and early summer to maintain shape and encourage fine ramification. Avoid late pruning.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during active growth. Reduce feeding towards the end of summer.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years, in spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces discreet flowers in spring, followed by small nuts (beechnuts) of minor ornamental interest. The main appeal lies in its structure and foliage.
