Originating from Asia, Prunus mume is a species highly valued in bonsai for its early and fragrant flowering that appears at the end of winter. Its elegant branching and increasingly textured bark with age provide strong ornamental interest, especially when the tree blooms before the leaves emerge.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Good sun exposure promotes more abundant flowering.
Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the substrate slightly moist but well drained.
Humidity: Adapts well to normal ambient humidity. Occasional misting may be beneficial during dry periods.
Pruning: Should be carried out after flowering. Tolerates both structural and maintenance pruning well.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during the active growing season. Reduce during flowering.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years in early spring, before vigorous growth begins.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces delicate, often white or pink, highly fragrant flowers in late winter or early spring. Small fruits may develop after flowering.
