Originating from Asia, Chaenomeles japonica is a species highly valued in bonsai for its early and abundant flowering, which appears in winter or early spring, creating a strong visual impact. Dense branching and a robust-looking trunk enhance its ornamental character.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Good exposure promotes flowering and overall vigor.
Watering: Water regularly, keeping the substrate slightly moist. Avoid prolonged dryness during active growth.
Humidity: Adapts well to normal humidity levels, benefiting from good air circulation.
Pruning: Structural pruning should be done after flowering. Maintenance pruning during the growing season helps control vigor and increase branch density.
Fertilization: Fertilize from after flowering until late summer. Suspend feeding during winter.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years, in late winter or early spring, before bud break.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces highly ornamental flowers in winter/early spring, followed by small decorative fruits in late summer and autumn.
