Native to Europe and Western Asia, the Cornus mas is a deciduous species appreciated in bonsai for its strong seasonal character, early flowering, and robust growth habit. Its oval, well-proportioned leaves contribute to a natural and balanced appearance, while the branch structure gains presence and maturity over time.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Good sun exposure supports healthy growth and enhances flowering performance.
Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the substrate evenly moist. More tolerant of brief dry periods than delicate species, but prolonged drought should be avoided.
Humidity: Adapts well to normal outdoor conditions. Misting is optional and mainly beneficial during very hot or dry weather.
Pruning: Prune in spring and summer to control growth and promote ramification. Structural pruning is best carried out after flowering.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during the active growing season. Reduce feeding towards the end of summer and stop in autumn.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years in spring, using a well-draining substrate suitable for deciduous bonsai.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces abundant yellow flowers in late winter or early spring, before leaf emergence. Decorative red fruits develop in late summer. The main ornamental value lies in the early flowering, branch structure, and seasonal expression.
