Native to Japan, Acer palmatum ‘Orange Dream’ is a highly regarded bonsai cultivar due to its bright seasonal colouring and refined growth habit. Spring foliage emerges in vivid yellow-orange tones, softening to light green in summer and returning to warm shades of yellow, orange, and gold in autumn. The finely divided palmate leaves create a light, airy texture, making it ideal for elegant bonsai with strong seasonal expression.
Light: Prefers bright partial shade. Tolerates gentle sun but should be protected from strong direct sunlight, especially in summer, to prevent leaf scorch.
Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the substrate evenly moist. Does not tolerate prolonged dryness or waterlogging.
Humidity: Appreciates moderate humidity. Misting can be beneficial during hot or dry periods.
Pruning: Can be carried out in spring and summer to control growth and promote fine ramification. Heavier structural pruning is best done during dormancy.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer throughout the active growing season. Reduce feeding towards the end of summer to enhance autumn colour.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years, in late winter or early spring, using a well-drained substrate.
Ornamental interest: The main appeal lies in its seasonal colour changes, delicate foliage texture, and light, natural silhouette.
