Originating from China, Acer buergerianum is one of the most prized species in the bonsai world for its elegant foliage and lush bark. Its leaves, which vary in shape and color, can range in tone from light green to intense red, often with serrated or lobed margins. The bark of the trunk is smooth and grayish in color, with subtle flaking patterns that add texture and visual interest to the tree. It is a plant of moderate growth and delicate branching, which makes it ideal for growing as a bonsai.

Sunlight : Acer buergerianum, also known as trident maple, prefers partial to full sunlight. It should receive direct sunlight in the morning and partial shade in the afternoon to protect it from the intense midday sun.

Watering : Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Trident maple does not like dry soil. Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix.

Humidity : Acer buergerianum likes moderate humidity levels. To increase humidity, you can place the bonsai pot on a tray with water and pebbles.

Pruning : Regular pruning is important to shape and maintain the shape of the bonsai. You can pinch back new growth to encourage branching.

Fertilization : Fertilize your Acer buergerianum during the growing season (spring and early summer) with a water-soluble fertilizer. Reduce or stop fertilizing in late summer and fall.

Transplanting : Transplant your Acer buergerianum every 2-3 years, usually in early spring before new growth begins. Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix.

Flowering : Acer buergerianum produces small yellow and green flowers, but is best known for its colorful fall foliage. Pruning can help encourage denser, more colorful growth.
