Native to Korea and China, Carpinus turczaninowii, known as the Korean Hornbeam, is a deciduous species highly valued in bonsai for its delicate foliage, compact growth, and beautiful autumn coloration. Its small, well-proportioned leaves and smooth grey bark make it ideal for refined bonsai styles. With age, the bark develops texture, giving the tree a mature and elegant appearance.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun or partial shade. Adequate sunlight helps maintain small leaves and enhances autumn coloration.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Increase watering frequency during hot summer days.
Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity. Occasional misting can be beneficial in dry weather.
Pruning: Prune during the growing season to maintain shape and encourage fine ramification. Structural pruning should be done in late winter before new growth begins.
Fertilization: Feed from spring to late summer with a balanced fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn before dormancy.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, preferably in early spring. Use a well-draining mix (akadama, pumice, and a bit of sand).
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, inconspicuous flowers. The main ornamental value lies in the small, elegant leaves, textured bark, and stunning autumn foliage.
