Native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, Crataegus monogyna, known as the Common Hawthorn or Single-seeded Hawthorn, is a deciduous species highly valued in bonsai for its rugged bark, small lobed leaves, and seasonal interest. Sunlight: Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. Direct sunlight enhances flowering and fruiting.

Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding both waterlogging and prolonged dryness. In summer, more frequent watering may be necessary.

Humidity: Adapts well to various humidity levels but thrives best in moderately humid environments.

Pruning: Prune after flowering to preserve next season’s flower buds. New shoots can be pinched throughout the growing season to maintain shape and density. Handle carefully due to its sharp thorns.

Fertilization: Feed from spring to early autumn with a balanced fertiliser. Reduce feeding in late autumn to prepare the tree for winter dormancy.

Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, preferably in early spring before new growth begins. Use a well-draining, slightly calcareous substrate.

Flowering and Fruiting: Produces fragrant white flowers in spring, followed by bright red berries in autumn that often persist through winter, adding year-round visual interest.
