Native to Europe, Alnus glutinosa is a deciduous species valued in bonsai for its natural grace and vigorous growth. Its smooth, greyish bark and fine branching create a balanced structure, while the rounded, glossy green leaves add a sense of freshness and vitality. In autumn, the foliage turns golden yellow, offering a warm contrast to the cool tones of the bark. This species embodies resilience and quiet harmony.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. Good light encourages compact growth and rich coloration.
Watering: Requires regular and abundant watering. Prefers moist soil and does not tolerate prolonged dryness.
Humidity: Thrives in cool, humid environments with good air circulation.
Pruning: Prune in late winter or after spring growth to control vigor and refine branch structure.
Fertilization: Feed from spring through summer with a balanced fertilizer. Reduce feeding in late summer and stop in winter.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in early spring before buds open. Use a moist but well-draining mix of akadama, pumice, and a little peat.
Seasonal interest: Produces subtle hanging catkins in late winter, adding delicacy and rhythm to the bonsai’s silhouette.
