Originating from Asia, Azalea satsuki is highly valued in bonsai for its compact habit, fine branching and abundant, long-lasting flowering. Its small, dark green leaves form a dense and elegant base, while the showy flowers—often with colour variations and patterns—provide strong ornamental appeal in spring and early summer.
Sunlight: Prefers bright partial shade. Strong direct sun may scorch leaves and flowers.
Watering: Requires regular and abundant watering, keeping the substrate consistently moist. Does not tolerate prolonged dryness.
Humidity: Appreciates humid environments. Misting is recommended, especially during hot or dry periods.
Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Avoid late pruning, as it may affect the next flowering.
Fertilization: Apply a fertilizer for acid-loving plants after flowering and during active growth. Reduce feeding in autumn.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years, after flowering, using an acidic, well-draining substrate.
Flowering: Produces large, showy flowers in shades of pink, red, white or mixed patterns, usually from spring to early summer, which is its main ornamental feature.
