Native to Japan, Azalea satsuki ‘Osakazuki’ is a classic bonsai cultivar highly valued for its vivid flowering and strong visual character. Blooms appear from late spring to early summer, predominantly in deep, bright red tones, creating a bold yet refined display. Its growth is vigorous but manageable, responding well to pruning and allowing for solid structural development, making it suitable for medium to larger bonsai.
Light: Prefers bright partial shade. Protect from strong direct sunlight, especially in summer and during flowering.
Watering: Requires regular and generous watering, keeping the substrate consistently moist. Does not tolerate prolonged dryness.
Humidity: Thrives in humid environments. Regular misting is recommended, particularly during hot or dry periods.
Pruning: Best carried out immediately after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Avoid late or out-of-season pruning.
Fertilization: Apply an azalea-specific fertilizer after flowering and throughout the active growing season. Suspend feeding during flowering.
Repotting: Every 2 years, after flowering, using a well-drained, acidic substrate suitable for azaleas.
Flowering: Flowers from late spring to early summer with abundant, high-impact blooms. The main ornamental appeal lies in the intensity of the flower colour and its contrast with the foliage.
