Originating from Europe, Cotoneaster microphyllus is highly appreciated in bonsai for its low, spreading habit, extremely fine branching and strong resilience. Its tiny, firm, deep-green leaves create a compact and detailed silhouette, making it ideal for naturalistic styles and small-sized trees. Subtle flowering and vibrant fruits add notable seasonal interest.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. Direct light encourages short internodes and abundant fruiting.
Watering: Likes slightly moist soil. It tolerates short dry periods, but the substrate should not dry out completely during very hot days.
Humidity: Adapts well to dry or moderately humid environments. Misting is optional.
Pruning: Prune in spring and summer to maintain compact growth and encourage fine ramification. It buds easily after cuts and responds very well to detailed structural work.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertiliser throughout the growing season. Reduce feeding in late summer to support fruit maturation.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years in spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small white flowers in spring, followed by decorative red fruits that persist into autumn and early winter, adding colour and texture to the composition.
