Originating from Europe, Cotoneaster spp. is a species highly appreciated in bonsai for its fine branching, compact habit and remarkable adaptability. Its small, smooth-textured leaves in deep green create a harmonious silhouette, while the subtle flowering and colourful fruits add interest throughout the seasons.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. Direct sunlight enhances flowering and fruiting.
Watering: Likes slightly moist soil. It tolerates some dryness, but the substrate should not be allowed to dry out completely during periods of intense heat.
Humidity: Adapts easily to dry or moderately humid environments. Misting is optional.
Pruning: Prune in spring and summer to maintain shape and promote fine ramification. It responds well to cuts and develops predictable new growth.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Reduce feeding in late summer to support fruit maturation.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years in spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small white flowers in spring, followed by decorative fruits (red, orange or pink) that persist into autumn and winter, providing colour and seasonal dynamism.
