Native to Japan and Korea, Pinus thunbergii is one of the most admired conifers in traditional bonsai. Its dark, textured trunk contrasts with dense green needles, conveying strength, longevity, and resilience. Its flexible structure allows various bonsai styles, making it a symbol of harmony and patience.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun. Direct sunlight most of the day promotes vigorous growth and enhances needle colour.
Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding waterlogging. Prefers well-drained soil with short dry periods between waterings.
Humidity: Tolerates moderate humidity if well-ventilated. Avoid overly damp locations to prevent root diseases.
Pruning: Prune and pinch new shoots in spring and summer to control vigor and balance foliage density. Responds well to advanced needle thinning and pinching techniques.
Fertilization: Feed regularly in spring and summer with organic or conifer-specific fertilizer. Reduce in late summer and stop in winter.
Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years, preferably in spring before new growth. Use a well-draining mix of akadama, pumice, and coarse sand.
Blooming: The beauty of Pinus thunbergii lies in the harmony between trunk and foliage, reflecting strength, patience, and wisdom — the essence of bonsai art.
