Originating from Asia, Zelkova nire is a deciduous species highly valued in bonsai for its elegant habit, well-defined trunk and fine, dense branching. Its small, serrated leaves create a delicate texture, while the balanced silhouette provides a natural and refined appearance throughout the year.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Good exposure promotes dense foliage.
Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the substrate slightly moist. Avoid waterlogging.
Humidity: Adapts well to normal environments. Misting is optional.
Pruning: Prune in spring and summer to maintain shape and encourage fine ramification. Responds well to pruning.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during active growth. Reduce feeding in autumn.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years, in spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, inconspicuous flowers in spring, followed by hardly noticeable fruits. The main ornamental interest lies in its structure and foliage.
