Originating from Asia, Ulmus parvifolia is a deciduous species highly valued in bonsai for its vigorous growth, fine branching and excellent back-budding ability. Its small, serrated leaves provide a delicate texture, while the trunk can develop strong character and movement over time.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Good exposure promotes dense foliage.
Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the substrate slightly moist. Avoid waterlogging.
Humidity: Adapts well to different humidity levels. Misting is optional.
Pruning: Prune throughout spring and summer to maintain shape and encourage fine ramification. Tolerates frequent pruning well.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during active growth. Reduce feeding in autumn.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years, in spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, inconspicuous flowers in spring, followed by winged seeds. The main ornamental interest lies in its structure and foliage.
