Originating from Asia, Chaenomeles chojubai is a species highly valued in bonsai for its naturally compact habit, dense branching and early, highly ornamental flowering. Small leaves emerge after flowering, forming a balanced canopy, while trunk and branches develop character over time.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Good exposure promotes abundant flowering.
Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the substrate slightly moist. Avoid waterlogging.
Humidity: Adapts well to different humidity levels. Misting is optional.
Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fine ramification. Tolerates structural pruning well.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer after flowering and during active growth. Reduce feeding in autumn.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years, in spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small flowers, usually red or pink, from winter to early spring. May develop small decorative fruits in late summer.
