Originating from Asia, Acer ginnala is a deciduous species highly valued in bonsai for its elegant habit, fine branching and outstanding autumn coloration. Its small, trilobed leaves provide a delicate texture during the growing season, turning intense shades of red and orange in autumn, which is its main ornamental feature.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Good exposure enhances autumn colour.
Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the substrate slightly moist. Avoid waterlogging.
Humidity: Adapts well to different humidity levels. Misting is optional.
Pruning: Prune in spring and summer to control growth and encourage fine ramification. Tolerates moderate pruning well.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during active growth. Reduce feeding towards the end of summer to enhance autumn colour.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years, in spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, inconspicuous flowers in spring, followed by winged seeds. The main ornamental interest lies in the foliage and autumn colour.
