Originating from Asia, Acer palmatum ‘Deshojo’ is a species highly valued in bonsai for its vivid red spring budding, which gradually softens in tone as the season progresses. Its palmate leaves provide lightness and elegance, while fine ramification allows for balanced and expressive compositions.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Protect from strong midday sun to preserve leaf coloration.
Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the substrate slightly moist. Avoid prolonged dryness.
Humidity: Appreciates some ambient humidity. Misting can be beneficial in dry climates.
Pruning: Prune in spring and summer to maintain shape and encourage fine ramification. Avoid heavy pruning outside the appropriate period.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during active growth. Reduce feeding during the hottest part of summer and in autumn.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years, in spring, using a well-draining, slightly acidic substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces discreet flowers in spring, followed by small, inconspicuous samaras. The main ornamental interest lies in the foliage and its seasonal transformation.
