Native to several regions of the Northern Hemisphere (Europe, Asia, and North America, depending on the species), Berberis is highly valued in bonsai for its rugged character, thorny branches, and foliage that shifts in color throughout the seasons. Its compact, well-branched structure allows for the creation of trees with strong visual impact and a natural sense of density.

Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. With good sun exposure, the foliage develops more intense colors and the tree maintains a tighter, more compact structure.

Watering: Regular watering during the growing season. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods, but performs best in a slightly moist, well-drained substrate.

Humidity: Adapts well to a wide range of humidity levels, provided there is good air circulation. Not particularly demanding.

Pruning: Responds very well to pruning. Regular maintenance pruning is important to control vigorous growth and encourage fine ramification. Care should be taken due to the thorns.

Fertilization: Fertilize from spring through autumn to support growth and recovery after pruning. Reduce feeding during winter.

Repotting: Every 2–3 years, preferably in early spring, using a well-draining bonsai substrate.

Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small yellow flowers in spring, followed by red or bluish berries in autumn. These are highly decorative and add strong seasonal interest to bonsai compositions.
