Native to Europe, Asia, and North America, species of the Crataegus genus are highly valued in bonsai for their natural appearance and rustic character. Fine branching, increasingly textured trunks, and strong seasonal expression make them especially evocative. Spring flowering and autumn fruiting add ornamental interest and reinforce the natural life cycle within bonsai compositions.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Adequate light encourages abundant flowering and reliable fruiting.
Watering: Requires regular watering, keeping the substrate evenly moist. Short dry periods are tolerated, but prolonged dryness should be avoided.
Humidity: Well adapted to normal environments, being a hardy and undemanding species.
Pruning: Can be pruned in spring and summer to control growth and encourage fine ramification. Structural pruning is well tolerated.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertiliser during the active growing season. Reduce after flowering to support fruit development.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years in spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces white or pinkish flowers in spring, followed by decorative fruits in autumn. The ornamental value lies in the balance between flowers, fruit, foliage, and structure.
