Native to Europe and Western Asia, Prunus cerasifera, commonly known as Cherry Plum, is a deciduous tree highly valued in bonsai for its fast growth, small to medium leaves, and early, showy flowering. The leaves can have reddish or purple tones, while the flowers bloom pink or white in early spring. It is ideal for informal, formal, and forest-style bonsai.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun for good flowering and leaf development but tolerates partial shade.
Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil moist, avoiding waterlogging. Tolerates some short drought, but prolonged periods should be avoided.
Humidity: Benefits from moderate humidity. Occasional misting helps in dry environments.
Pruning: Structural pruning should be done in late winter. During the growing season, pinching back shoots helps control vigour and shape.
Fertilization: Feed in spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser. Reduce or stop feeding in late summer.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, preferably in early spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small pink or white flowers in early spring, followed by small edible red fruits. Its main ornamental value in bonsai lies in early flowering, colorful foliage, and decorative fruits.
