Native to East Asia, Carpinus turczaninowii, commonly known as Turczaninow Hornbeam, is a medium-growing species highly valued in bonsai for its dense foliage, small leaves with fine veins, and ease of branching. The leaves are dark green in summer and turn yellow to reddish in autumn, providing seasonal interest. It is ideal for formal, informal, and forest-style bonsai.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun for good autumn colour but tolerates partial shade.
Watering: Water regularly to keep the substrate slightly moist. Avoid waterlogging, which may damage roots.
Humidity: Benefits from moderate humidity. Occasional misting is recommended in dry environments.
Pruning: Prune in late winter. During the growing season, pinching new shoots helps maintain compact form and encourage dense branching.
Fertilization: Feed in spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser. Reduce or stop feeding in late summer.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, preferably in spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces inconspicuous flowers in spring. The main ornamental value in bonsai lies in the foliage, branching, and trunk texture.
