Originating from Europe, Asia, and North America, Euonymus spp. is a popular species in the world of bonsai due to its versatile and adaptable nature. This species comes in a variety of colors and forms, with leaves ranging from deep green to variegated patterns of white and pink. Euonymus spp. is known for its compact growth and small leaves, making it an excellent choice for bonsai cultivation.
Sunlight: Euonymus spp. prefers full sun for healthy growth and better leaf coloration. It can tolerate partial shade, but the intensity of the colors may be reduced.
Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, watering when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch. Avoid waterlogging, as Euonymus spp. is sensitive to excess water.
Humidity: Euonymus spp. is not very demanding regarding humidity but benefits from moderate levels. A humidity tray is not necessary unless the environment is extremely dry.
Pruning: Pruning is important to maintain shape and stimulate healthy growth. Prune new growth to promote branching and maintain the desired size. Be careful with spines and use gardening gloves when pruning.
Fertilization: Fertilize Euonymus spp. during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Reduce or stop fertilization in autumn and winter.
Repotting: Repot Euonymus spp. every 2–3 years, preferably in spring before new growth begins. Use a well-draining soil mix suitable for bonsai.
Flowering and Fruiting: Euonymus spp. may produce small flowers and colorful fruits, depending on the species. Proper pruning can help promote flowering and fruiting.
