Native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, Cotoneaster is a genus of shrubs highly valued in bonsai cultivation for its hardiness and ornamental appeal. Its small, oval, glossy leaves make it ideal for miniature proportions. In spring, it produces clusters of small white or pink flowers, followed in autumn by red, orange, or black berries that are highly decorative. Cotoneaster is a versatile species, easy to shape and very resilient, suitable for both beginners and experienced bonsai enthusiasts.

Sunlight: Cotoneaster prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. Direct sunlight encourages abundant flowering and fruiting.

Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil slightly moist but avoiding waterlogging. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Humidity: It adapts well to various humidity levels and is not demanding. In very dry environments, occasional misting can be beneficial.

Pruning: Regular pruning is important to maintain a compact shape. New shoots can be pinched to encourage ramification. Long shoots should be trimmed back promptly.

Fertilization: Fertilise during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser. Reduce fertilisation in late summer and autumn.

Repotting: Repot every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring, using a well-draining bonsai substrate.

Flowering and Fruiting: Cotoneaster flowers in spring and produces berries in autumn, which often persist through winter, greatly enhancing the bonsai’s decorative value.
