Native to Japan, Pinus thunbergii, known as Japanese Black Pine, is a conifer highly valued in bonsai for its hardiness, sculptural trunk, and dense foliage. The needles are long and dark green, and the trunk has thick, fissured bark, giving an aged appearance. It is ideal for formal and informal bonsai styles, as well as large container planting.

Quantity

Sunlight: Prefers full sun, essential for healthy development and intense needle colour.

Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding waterlogging. More frequent watering may be needed in summer.

Humidity: Adapts to varying humidity levels but benefits from good air circulation. Occasional misting helps in very dry climates.

Pruning: Can be pruned in late winter to structure the tree. Pinching new shoots in spring helps maintain shape and foliage density.

Fertilization: Feed from spring to early autumn with a balanced fertiliser, reducing in late summer.

Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years in early spring using a very well-draining soil mix (akadama, pumice, and some organic soil).

Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, inconspicuous male and female flowers in spring. The main ornamental interest lies in the needles, trunk, and overall shape.
