Originating from Asia and the Mediterranean region, Punica granatum ‘Nejikan’ is a cultivar highly valued in bonsai for its naturally twisted trunk, compact growth and strong visual character. Its small, glossy leaves form a balanced canopy, while flowering and fruiting add significant ornamental interest.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun. Good exposure is essential for abundant flowering and fruiting.
Watering: Requires regular watering during active growth. Tolerates slight dryness between waterings, but avoid waterlogging.
Humidity: Adapts well to dry to moderately humid environments. Misting is optional.
Pruning: Prune in spring and summer to maintain shape and encourage ramification. Tolerates structural pruning well.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer during active growth. Reduce feeding in autumn.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years, in spring, using a well-draining substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces intense red flowers from late spring to summer, followed by small decorative fruits that enhance its ornamental value.
