Originating from China, the Ginkgo biloba is one of the most appreciated species in the world of bonsai, standing out for its unique and elegant foliage. Its fan-shaped leaves are a vibrant green that turns into a golden hue in autumn, creating a true spectacle of colors in the garden. It is a slow-growing tree with great longevity, making it ideal for cultivation as a bonsai. In addition, Ginkgo biloba is known for its medicinal properties, being used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine.

Sunlight: The Ginkgo biloba prefers full sun for healthy and vigorous growth. It can tolerate partial shade, but growth may be slower, and the foliage less lush.

Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging the roots. Allow the top layer of soil to dry between waterings to prevent root rot. The Ginkgo is drought-resistant, but still needs regular watering, especially during periods of intense heat.

Humidity: Ginkgo biloba is not very demanding regarding air humidity, but it benefits from moderate levels. A humidity tray is not necessary unless the environment is extremely dry.

Pruning: Pruning is important to maintain the shape and structure of the tree. Prune new growth to encourage branching and keep an appropriate size. Avoid over-pruning, as the Ginkgo grows slowly and may take time to recover.

Fertilization: Fertilize the Ginkgo during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Reduce or stop fertilizing at the end of summer and autumn to allow the tree to enter dormancy.

Repotting: Repot the Ginkgo every 2-3 years, preferably in the spring, before new growth begins. Use a well-draining soil mix rich in organic matter.

Flowering and Fruiting: Ginkgo biloba is dioecious, meaning there are male and female trees. Female trees produce fruits with an edible seed at the end of autumn. Male trees produce yellow catkin-like flowers. Proper pruning can help promote fruiting in female trees.
