Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Gardenia jasminoides is one of the most refined species used in bonsai, celebrated for its pure white blossoms and unmistakable fragrance. Its dark, glossy leaves form a striking contrast with the creamy petals that bloom from late spring to summer. Elegant and serene, it embodies a quiet balance between grace and vitality.
Sunlight: Prefers bright light, with protection from harsh midday sun. Can tolerate partial shade with sufficient brightness.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Gardenia is sensitive to both drought and excess water.
Humidity: Thrives in humid, well-ventilated environments. Mist the leaves during hot weather, avoiding the flowers.
Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Remove spent blooms and yellowing leaves.
Fertilization: Feed every two weeks in spring and summer with an acid or balanced fertilizer (such as for azaleas). Reduce feeding in autumn and stop in winter.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years in early spring. Use a well-draining, acidic soil mix of akadama, kanuma, and a bit of peat.
Blooming: Gardenia jasminoides captivates through contrast — dark foliage, white blossoms, and its soft fragrance — a symbol of purity, elegance, and inner calm.
