Originating from Europe, Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) is highly appreciated in bonsai for its aromatic presence, fine texture and Mediterranean character. Its narrow, grey-green, highly fragrant leaves create a light and elegant silhouette, while the woody stems and compact growth make it ideal for naturalistic styles and small bonsai.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun. The more direct light it receives, the denser and healthier the foliage will be.
Watering: Likes the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging; it is sensitive to excess moisture.
Humidity: Prefers dry, well-ventilated environments. Misting is not recommended, as it can encourage fungal issues.
Pruning: Prune in spring and summer to maintain shape and encourage ramification. It grows vigorously and buds well after moderate cuts, but avoid very hard pruning into old wood.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer. Use sparingly, as the species naturally prefers poorer soils.
Repotting: Every 2–3 years in spring, using a well-draining substrate (high in coarse, airy components).
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small blue or lilac flowers in spring and early summer, adding subtle colour and lightness to the tree. The bloom is decorative yet discreet.
