Native to the Southeast Asia, Ficus retusa is highly valued in bonsai for its dense, glossy, dark green foliage. It is a resilient species with relatively fast growth, allowing the development of interesting trunks and crowns in a short period. Bonsai specimens may also develop aerial roots, adding visual character and structure.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun or filtered light. For indoor cultivation, a bright location is essential to maintain foliage density.
Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding waterlogging. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Ficus retusa is sensitive to overwatering.
Humidity: Benefits from moderate humidity. Occasional misting can help maintain vigor in dry environments.
Pruning: Pruning is essential to control growth and encourage dense branching. Trim new shoots year-round. Wiring is possible, but handle carefully to avoid damaging the bark or leaves.
Fertilization: Fertilize during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.
Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, preferably in early spring, using a well-draining bonsai substrate.
Flowering and Fruiting: Produces small, inconspicuous flowers and rare fruits with no ornamental value. Its aesthetic appeal lies in its dense, glossy foliage and the shape of the crown.
